LEGION
AUXILIARY
OUR MISSION
SUPPORTING THE LEGION
AND TO HONOR THE SACRIFICE OF THOSE WHO SERVED BY ENHANCING THE LIVES OF OUR VETERANS, MILITARY, AND THEIR FAMILIES BOTH AT HOME AND ABROAD.
-
Veteran Support - Veterans at the VA hospitals enjoy visits from unit members, bingo, and free phone calls to loved ones. Unit #173 currently supports a veteran from West Lafayette, Indiana.
-
Scholarships - The Auxiliary was able to give three scholarships in 2025.
-
Hoosier Girls State - We sponsor South Ripley students entering their senior year to participate in this week-long program. Participants learn real-world skills and leadership by creating a functional state government based on Indiana's political process.
-
Memorial Day Events - Place flags on every Auxiliary member's grave at Cliff Hill Cemetery.
-
Wreaths Across America - Our unit participates in the program at Versailles Square in December and also brings the Wreaths education program into local schools.
-
ALA Poppy Program - Connecting the visual image of the poppy with the sacrifice of service made by our veterans has been an important goal of the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program since its inception in 1921. On Memorial Day and Veterans Day, millions of red crepe paper poppies are distributed across the country in exchange for donations that go directly to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans in our communities. Our unit had a record-breaking year in 2025.
-
Taste of Versailles - We assist the American Legion with this event.
-
Flags - In 2025, we distributed 44 small flags along with information about the flag to people attending the Versailles Farmers Market.
-
Americanism Essay - Our post had five winners in 2025, all of whom were also district winners.

When you are a member of our unit, you also know that your dues help fund our scholarship program, aid to VA hospitals, veteran programs, teaching our children about Americanism, disaster fund relief, and much more.
