Versailles American Legion Leora Weare Post 173 

Our legion is named after Leora McKinley Weare, born in Versailles, Indiana, on February 3, 1894. Called into the US Army on September 20th, 1917. He embarked on May 17th, 1918, for France with the Company M 120th Infantry 30th Division. Corporal Weare was killed in Action on September 29th, 1918, at the front line trenches near St. Quentin. France on the Hindenburg line. He is buried in the "Old Hickory Cemetery," an American part of the British cemetery. American Legion Post 173, Versailles, Indiana, is named in his honor. Corporal Weare was the first Versailles soldier of WW I to pay the Ultimate price for his country. He was 24 years old.
